The Speaking Kangaroo

This is as much a post as a reminder of milestones.

Margo said her first sentence today. "Kaw is sitting in Mama's chair." (Kaw is her toy kangaroo.)

She may have said "Phoque est en train de 'crying'" (the seal is crying) during bathtime a week or two ago, but I'm not sure if I just pieced it together, or willed it in my mind, because "Celui là, il est en train de (insert English verb)" was a common phrase from my grandmother.

She has also finally started to refer to herself by name, correctly. There were a few weeks of "Meego," but I think that she's clearly saying "Margo" now.

I'm absolutely loving watching her synthesize thoughts. Whereas she used to have one word for everything, that word was either in English OR in French. Now she realizes that different people use different words, so she is starting to formulate distinct languages, with Mama or her daycare getting girl, cry, yes, one, two, three, and Papa, and sometimes Mama, getting fille, pleure, oui, one, onetwodeux and toi.

Now, I'm not saying that she's a rocket linguist yet... there's still some learning going on. Walking down our street, when we got to the cross-street where her friend Evan lives, she went on and on about Thomas toy Thomas toy (Evan has Thomas the Tank Engine toys that Margo has taken a shine to). When I asked her, yes, Thomas is over there, but what is the name of the little boy who owns Thomas, and at whose house Thomas lives, there was a long pause of Margo trying to figure out the string of words that had just streamed out of Papa's mouth.

After about 10 seconds, she came up with: "Choo chooooooo."

Next up, debate club.
