Solids

Sometimes, you see two things, and you can't help but put them together. Like maple and walnut. Perogies and sour cream. Las Vegas circus performers and white tigers.

Or... two new baby teeth and half a banana left over from a brunch.

We've felt that Margo could definitely handle solid food for quite some time, but kept pushing it off for various reasons. A friendly public health nurse even pointed out that waiting longer can help prevent babies from developing certain food allergies. That seems like a perfectly good reason to hold off until Margo is about 6 months old.

But then there comes that deep down instinct to not waste food, and we had the option of either eating that half a banana ourselves, full as we were, or mashing it up and experimenting.

Interesting results. She was lukewarm to the idea at first. Actually, it's probably more that she didn't know what to do with non-liquid food in her mouth. The chewing learning curve was pretty steep, but she didn't know what to do with the banana once she had chewed it, letting it instead slide out of her mouth. Five minutes later, she was chewing, swallowing and lunging for more. An efficient eater... who would have known given her genetics?

There's a 1 minute video of her trying this "food" stuff here, but it's very large and could take a while to download.

In all, she ate no more than 4 teaspoons of banana, and we probably won't make it a daily occurence, but that's a pretty major step. Good work, girlie!

- Michel

(p.s. you can just make out her two teeth in the photo above, just above the waterfall of mashed banana running down her chin).

Whow, way to go Margo, things are happening so fast. That is so neat to see her catching on so fast.

I hear that Margo will have a little friend to play with in the future.
It's great that Maggie and Roger's little daughter will be so close to the same age.

Too funny! You can tell she's not sure enough to even have any comment.

What is that lovely piece she's wearing? Looks like a indian silk print of sorts. Exquisite on Lady La Douce.
