Off the Charts

Hiya.

Yesterday was another appointment with the midwife, just to see how things were going. Midwives, as a general rule, aren't that fussy about taking measurements to compare babies. You don't leave the midwife's office thinking "Wow, my daughter's big toe is in the 98th percentile for size as compared to other babies." That's not to say that midwives are witch doctors who don't use any form of measurement, they just measure the important stuff, like weight gain.

Margo gained 9 oz in the past couple of weeks. She's now 10lbs, 9 oz.

That puts her in the 100th percentile of our children. I'm not a scientist, but I do play one on TV.

Being back at work, now when I come back home after being absent for 10 hours, I notice a difference. Today's difference was that I could really feel how heavy her head is when she's laying on my arm.

Because babies heads are big. Given my family history, we were expecting her head to be bigger than it is, but it's still plenty big.

Check out this painting. Madonna and child. Well, adonna and child, not really mydonna and child.

Renaissance painters insisted on making baby Jesus the same proportions as adults. Big mistake. Just doesn't seem to fit.

This is the reality.

So, yeah, my arm gets a little tired when I support her head with my hands. Yeah, my daughter can only hold her head up for short periods of time. Yeah, she eats close to 10 times a day... but let's get some perspective on this, people... I think she's doing pretty good, all things considered. Yeah, high five, Margo!
