The Picture of Health

Today was Margo's 2 week check-up (technically, her 17 day check-up) at the midwife's office. I'm happy, if not ecstatic to report that LaDouce is well on her way to the 5 storeys tall /350 lbs prediction that I made earlier. Our staff artists have come up with this computer generated image of her future growth predictions.

Margo is just shy of 10lbs, is now 21" long, and her head circumference has increased 2 cm.

(I love Canada, and the fact that Canadians have taken the middle road between metric and Imperial. I really believe that Trudeau missed his mark and should have developed a unique Canadian system of measurement. We could have been measuring fuel efficiency in KiloPierres/Elliott.)

She also passed her hearing test in both ears, which is quite surprising because she didn't study for either test. As for strength, the student midwife was trying to take her pulse, but Number One Daughter kept pushing herself away from the midwife with her legs. It's a little hard to get across just how impressive that is, but to put it in context, at 2 weeks old, she can only hold her head up for seconds at a time, but is able to legpress her body weight plus a friction co-efficient of at least 20 deciTrudeaus/sq.margaret.

So all this to say that she is the picture of health. You know that moment when you're expecting a baby, and people ask you if you would prefer a boy or a girl, and you're obligated to say "I'd be happy with either, as long as the baby is healthy" but really you're thinking "I want an absolute clone of myself in every way so that I re-create my life, but better?"

Well, when you discover that you truly do have a healthy baby, this overwhelming feeling that everything is going to be alright comes over you. It's true, we did just want a healthy baby, and that's what we got. Now we're working on the happy baby part.

It's getting late. I just wanted to post a few nice pics of the girl.

Sorry for the graininess of this photo. The room was quite dark, which isn't great for photos, but very good for catching mothers and daughters when they're sleeping.

We're not the most wide-awake parents during nightime feedings, and we often wake up the next morning and try to forensically recreate what happened the night before. In this particular scene, we counted 11 sheets, blankets and receiving blankets on the bed, covering various body parts.

The image to the right is for my portfolio. We thought that it would be good if I took a crack at becoming a model for the tricky men's fashion & baby gear section of the Sears catalogue. The money isn't very good, but fame like that opens doors in this dog-eat-baby-sling world.

And finally, to the left is 17-day old Margo and MamaDonna. The evening of Day 17 saw a little more MarMon than Margo, and here we see Donna trying one of many soothing techniques. It worked for a short period of time, but definitely longer than the cat-and-squirrel juggling session, and way, waaaay longer than Brahms' "Lullaby" performed on foghorns and car alarms.

Parenting can be a learn-as-you-go venture.

It's cute that Donna and Margo have the same haircut. I can't wait until she grows into Michel's!
