Two of the Three Faces of Margo

Into every life, a little rain must fall. Newborns display very few emotions. For the first two weeks, we had the standard clement face, a sure sign of her saying "Okay, your parenting is acceptable... stay the course," and the other was, well, as seen above. Often, it's from hunger. Sometimes, just being tired. In this particular case, she discovered that funding for Status of Women had been cut by $5M. We tried to calm her down by telling her that the money was only coming from administrative cuts, not programs, but past a certain point, there's no reasoning with her. We think she may be a tax-and-spend liberal.

Hmm... maybe she was upset that the Status of Women wasn't scrapped completely. It hasn't dawned on me until now, but maybe she's a cowboy conservative.

In any case, one of the most recent developments has been that she's starting to focus on things, which has led to a new face: discovery. We bought a developmental mobile -- less focus on recognizable images like dogs and houses, and more emphasis on shapes and colours, things on which a baby can focus. Yesterday was the first day that she started picking up on them. I think it worked, too, because she now "gets" cartoons from the New Yorker.

I think the smiles will be coming soon. We've seen a few. Definitely smiles and not gas, but they're fleeting.

dudes,

no comment on the hilarity - for godsake, do keep it up. just want to clarify that the 5 mill was cut from status of women canada (swc), a federal agency headed up by a bona fide minister. the national action committee on the status of women is (was?) a national umbrella org for women's groups - it has been in a coma for several years and a small bunch of keeners is presently attempting to revive it.

and also, tell your baby to tone down the cuteness. it's exhausting, really.

that is all.

Egg on my face... all these years, I honestly thought that it was the media being lazy and using a shortened form. Did you hear that REAL Women have called for SWC to be disbanded. I loved how Jenn used to refuse to say REAL and would spell it out as R-E-A-L to show that she didn't think that they should speak for all "real" women.

I blame my sleep addled blame on not catching the error, and I appreciate you correcting us, Pam! I was following the R.E.A.L women/SWC story through the media (and your pamusement blog/Audra's blog) and even took the time to send a few letters. Ah the days before child. Michel said to me this am . . "did you know that NAC and SWC are different bodies?" . . yes, I did, but my sleep deprived state (and Michel's merging of the two names in his entry) caused me to forget!

Thanks again - glad you're tuning in and keeping us on the straight and narrow!
