First Day of the Next 55 Weeks!
(originally posted on August 14, 2006)
I've made it to Maternity leave. As one friend put it, now that I'm done work, the real work begins. I think I am liking it so far . . of course there is no screaming baby/diapers to change and wash/lack of sleep so life is just peachy.
But there's also no Margo so it's not perfect!!
I have had a productive first day so far and it's only 10:30. I woke up, showered, cleaned out the freezer in the kitchen (how many bags containing one freezer burned hotdog/hamburger bun does one household need - none, really!), cleaned out under the sink - and located what has been leaking, (Michel may attend to it when he gets home) taken myself out for breakie, and picked up some disposable baking dishes for the rest of today's activities. I'm going to make a few sheperd's pies, and a lasagna to stockpile in the freezer. I also rescued some bananas from the freezer so will likely whip up some banana bread (coconut and rum flavoured with lime glaze - our favourite!). Then I'm going to make dinner . . I didn't end up cooking last night as I was in serious owie land (hips are giving out - not sure why!) so I've got a roasting chicken waiting to be roasted. I think that will make a very full day. I'll also have to fit in a nap sometime in there! (just because I can)
So . . . here's the latest picture of me at 37 weeks - woah mama she's getting big . . me, not Margo. I am modelling a lovely nursing nightie I picked up at Motherhood. Margo may own a matching onesie. Just saying. (Won't that be a cute picture??)

The prenatal class last week is definitely deserving of a few words . . .Pat and Vicky joined us for an evening with Gillian, the granola doula. She went through some anatomy stuff (lovely old pictures of just how compressed your rectum gets during labour), showed the dads how to squeeze our hands to provide pain relief, taught us how to moan, (get low into your body, she urged . . umm . . but isn't that where the pain resides?), how to breathe through the worst of the contractions, and had us practice latching a baby on to our breasts, with a stuffed dog named Charlie (yes, after mom and dad's mutt) standing in for Gordon and Margo. No, that' wasn't a little embarrassing. All in all, a very good few hours, one which has provided all sorts of knowledge I didn't have before, and which I'm sharing with friends how are either pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or wondering if they'll even have kids. I may be scaring some people away from reproducing . . but I hope not. Last week's checkup went well, too. I saw a different midwife and everything was looking good. Nice optimal blood pressure (110/68) and good strong heartbeat for Margo. I will go again this Wednesday to see Stephanie - curious to see how Margo is positioned - she's still definitely head down, just not sure if she's posterior (with her back on mine) or anterior (with her back facing out). I'm hoping for the latter, as posterior presentation can result in a harder, longer, more painful labour, and who needs that? Not I!
I'm off to get started on the cooking phase of today's agenda. Wish me luck!
